Written by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay
Directed by Adam McKay

Starring Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Steve Carrell and James Marsden

Adam McKay has been absent from the silver screen for three years now and his directorial return, ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES, is certainly a welcome one. He has been at the helm of many a Will Ferrel film – ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY, THE OTHER GUYS, STEP BROTHERS, and TALLADEGA NIGHTS – so one could presume their relationship is pretty solid, one might even say, classy. The ANCHORMAN sequel has been ten years in the making and while most sequels fail to soar as high as their predecessors, THE LEGEND CONTINUES easily lives up to its name. Some of it is a bit of a rehash but the cameos are better and plentiful, the antics are far more outrageous, and it is great fun in a way that no one will see coming.

ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES finds the legend himself, Ron Burgundy (Ferrell), being asked to join GNN (Global News Network) a brand new, daring 24-hour news service channel. The only condition Ron has is that he has to bring his entire news team with him, including Brick (Steve Carell), Champ (David Koechner), and Brian (Paul Rudd), which GNN agrees to. Once they are at GNN, the current leading anchor, Jack Lime (James Marsden) expresses his issues with Ron and his team and they make one ridiculous bet that could forever change the worlds of these five men. If Ron can not get higher ratings then Jack, he must retire, but if he succeeds, Jack will have to legally change his name to Jack Lame. Can Burgundy and the news team whip up enough ratings at 2 am to beat Jack Lime or will Ron never read the news again and fall into complete obscurity?

ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES had big shoes to fill given the cult following of the THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY, perhaps the classiest movie ever made. Fortunately, it is top notch material that even manages to improve on the original at times. The only downside to THE LEGEND CONTINUES, is that it can be a tad bit repetitive. That said, 1980’s New York City provides opportunity for politically incorrect antics that are often funnier because of the twists the new setting provides. The news team delivers the hilarious, action-packed melodrama we have all come to love and adore from the Channel 4 news team, only now on a much larger scale. This has been ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES. For Black Sheep Reviews, I’m Justin Waldman; you stay classy readers.

  1. You sir, just made my day. This was in my top 3 most anticipated for 2013. So glad to hear that it’s a worth sequel.

    Great review!

  2. I’m afraid we differ on this one, my friend. I thought this paled in comparison to the original. The first film had heart; this film just felt like an excuse to be politically incorrect. I could have forgiven that too if it had actually been funny. Unfortunately, most of it just felt forced to me. I did like the epic park battle though.

  3. I’m going to have to agree with Joseph here. I found there were just too many long stretches in the film where I just wasn’t laughing. I loved the first installment, but this time I really couldn’t have cared less what happened to Ron. I’ll give it credit for having great cameos though!
