Black Sheep Reviews presents The 2014 Mouton d’Or Awards

The 2014 Mouton d’Or Award Nominations

2014 Mouton d'Or Awards Banner

With award season in full swing, it is time to announce the Black Sheep Reviews 2014 Mouton d’Or Award nominations! Not to diminish all the nominees that have come before these, but this year’s pack of hopefuls are pretty special to me for one very distinct reason. This is the 10th anniversary of the Mouton d’Or Awards! For ten years now, Black Sheep Reviews has been honouring the best in cinema with this annual tradition and I am very proud to be able to say that. As Black Sheep’s editor and chief film critic, I cannot tell you how much this means to me. Thank you for joining me, and the Black Sheep Reviews family, for this journey. It has taken me to so many unexpected places in my life, both high’s and low’s, and it has become a part of my life, a part of me even, in ways I had never imagined.

And thank you for being back again this year to see what films we have chosen to recognize as the greatest achievements in film from the year that just ended. This year’s Mouton d’Or Award winner for Best Picture will join past winners like NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and THE SOCIAL NETWORK, as well as last year’s winner, GRAVITY, and the very first Mouton d’Or Award recipient, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, where it will be in very good company. But what film will that be?

BIRDMAN OR (THE UNEXPECTED VIRTUE OF IGNORANCE) leads this year’s Mouton d’Or Award nominations with a hefty nine nods, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and a slew of acting nods. Fellow Best Picture nominees, BOYHOOD and THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL are next in line with eight nominations apiece. NIGHTCRAWLER follows with six nominations and it, along with four-time nominee, SELMA, make up this year’s Best Picture contenders.

Like every other year before it, this year’s Black Sheep Readers Choice Award nominees are an impressive bunch. Year after year, you, the readers, voice your choices for your favourite films of the year and the results consistently surprise me. This year’s pack ranges from big blockbusters like GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and GONE GIRL to tiny little features like UNDER THE SKIN and WHIPLASH. You even chose to honour your own with your support for Canada’s MOMMY. Thank you again to all who submitted their film choices. You can vote for the Black Sheep Readers Choice Award until Thursday, February 12, at midnight.  Vote online by making your choice from the ten finalists in the poll found at the bottom of this post, as well as on the sidebar menu of the site.

The 10th annual Mouton d’Or Award winners will be announced, Sunday, February 15. And without any further delay, here are the nominees. (Click any title to read the original Black Sheep review.)

Once again, the winners be revealed Sunday, February 15. My apologies to Bradley Cooper, as I was unable to see AMERICAN SNIPER in time for consideration. And my thanks go out to the BAFTA people, for the inspired choice of moving Steve Carrell to the supporting category. It made my job much easier.

    • Wowza, George! Thanks for sharing. And thanks for making me feel less alone in my geekdom. I’d say we have fairly similar tastes. I’m not sure I get the Knightley love but I didn’t fall head over heels with The Imitation Game the way so many other people did. And most of the titles on your disappointment list were also considerations for mine. Noah and Nympho didn’t make my list in the end but I thought about it. Thanks as always for your support and don’t forget to vote!

      • We should collaborate on writing a screenplay titled “Noah, the Nympho”!!!!
